Welcome to D-D! Hey, since you have already done some menu work and because Filler is tied up with a benefit this weekend, would you possibly help me with some Slayers menu files I am struggling to translate 100% accurately? If so, I will upload them into a zip file and provide a link, then I can return to writing more early dialogue.


I make no promises (my Japanese is pretty rusty, though I'm fluent in Chinese), but I'd be willing to take a look at it, assuming there's not too much and you don't need it immediately (my weekend's pretty busy what with Halloween and 3 small daughters). And hey, if I can't figure it out, I could ask my students next week (I'm an ESL teacher of 50+ college-aged Japanese exchange students).

Fifty... Japanese... exchange... students...!? *Gulp...!* DOUBLE WOW!! Uh, how would they like an *A'hem...* extra credit class project (Hee-hee...!) translating an entire Japanese RPG script!? (Just kidding...)

Anyway Filler can probably knock these out in just a few hours once he's available again early next week, the ones I can't crack or get to, that is. He's doing a benefit all weekend long for a colleague who lost his home. Thanks, but I'll keep plodding away with these files during the weekend while watching football. I'm hoping the battle menus are in one of them. So far, I've translated one small file with five commands that appear to be related to confessing, praying, detoxification, and uncursing, but that one has only has five entries including "Exit". Could those be menu commands related to the church I encountered in the second village? A few of the files are quite a bit longer however.

BTW, later on, we'll be getting to Destiny of an Emperor Gameboy. I have a translated Japanese script for that one in hand, but I may have some warlord names that are different than those in DoaE-II that I will need someone to help me resolve, names such Zhuge Liang. I had a government translator in Honolulu examine my warlord list once for DoaE-II. He related that some of the names were constructed using archaic ideographs that he had use guesswork on. Also, I understand we have an SNES DoaE game floating around out there that is written entirely in Chinese. I have always hoped we could dump that one someday and translate it, if you're interested in the Romance of Three Kingdoms saga (late Han dynasty - circa 200 A.D.). Just a thought... You're the first Chinese reader/speaker I've encountered in 10 years who happens to love RPGs!

I'm a big fan of Romance of the Three Kingdoms - while I lived in Taiwan, I picked up an adult adaptation of the book (which proved to be a bit too difficult for me - curse all those archaic names!), a gorgeously drawn 3 volume version for older children (which is more my level), and Fantasia Three Kingdoms 2 (one of the many PC RPG series based on Rot3K). However, as I quickly discovered when I offered to help translate Heroine Anthem several years ago and failed, there's a big difference between being able to play through a Chinese game while understanding the gist of things and being able to translate a script devoid of context. Besides which, between my job, my family, game reviewing, and my own game development (I just released a text-based interactive novel on XBox Live Indie Games), adding a full game translation to the list seems a bit overwhelming.

On the other hand if it's smaller stuff like here's a dozen Rot3K names that you can't figure out, well, then I might be able to help out or find someone else who could (besides the Japanese students that I'm teaching, there are also many students from China who come through our program as well as a few Korean students and some students from the Middle East).

I keep hearing about the Slayers series (I mean the games) it seems like a game I would love to play. Gods and Demons, dragons and magic...yes, I would love to play it. I eagerly await the thread "Slayers" in the "Dynamic Designs Completed Project Forum"

Turns out the one to which I am referring is an .smd (Mega Drive) ROM that plays on Gens, etc. It may be a bootleg game put together with an RPGMAKER type of program. Nevertheless, it appears interesting. I've been wondering for years if we could dump it.

What games are you working on right now? Every once in a while I see some interesting game you mention at RHDN but are not on your personal website.

Focusing right now on several games with finished scripts:
Momotarou Densetsu (Famicom) - need to test this pretty well. The ROM expansion method I used will crash if a string is too long (should be able to handle strings a couple hundred characters long, which should be enough for most text.)
Light of Indra (Famicom) - I sent tummai a beta patch with the hacking nearly finished, so that he can check the script for context errors.
3x3 Eyes: Advent of the Divine Demon (SFC)
Nadia (MD) - going to take awhile as I have to test and format the text to fit within windows, needing manual formatting to make it look good.
Maka-maka (SFC) - this is why I'm going manual-formatting with Nadia. I had an auto-formatter on this, but I realized I was manually formatting text anyways to place line-breaks and such more neatly.
Deep Dungeon 3 (FC). This game got frustrating difficult. I know I'll come back to finish it. Or when I swallow my pride and use cheats.
Milky Way Trio/Ginga no Sannin/Earth Fighter Raizer (FC). Another game with a finished script I need to get cracking on testing. Hacking seems pretty complete from what I've played.

Whats the Japanese name for Light of Indra, I can't find much info on the game.

I really wish we could expand Destiny of an Emperor-II someday so I can put back the missing parts of the story. We made max use of substring compression and DTE at the time, but much of the poetic richness and romantic flavor of this saga plummeted to the cutting room floor!

As for hand formatting, I don't see the possibility of a writer ever making do with an auto system. Not just to create better cosmetics, I feel I must see every sight and hear every strain of music and all of the sound effects before I can properly craft a scene with ellipses, [key] tags, [pause]s, and colored font for emphasis (in lieu of grammatically correct italics). Some sections I rewrite maybe six times - others as many as 25. This is almost impossible for me working exclusively from a cold file. Then, we go through internal beta and start the rewrite process all over again, tweaking, polishing, and scratching around with everything until the team votes to release.

Good luck with these games! Looks like a fun package.
