Yes I saw that headline. And yes I'd have to play that PS2 remake too. But after the excellent PSP ports and story continuations of FF1 & 2 on the PSP Square-Enix lately have had a very bad record on making
ports of their old classics for other platforms and the
PC. Even with their 2D games they didn't do a wholesale overhaul of the 2D graphics?!? In some they did fully 3D remasters like on the DS/3DS which weren't necessarily what the people who knew of the SNES era of games were looking for. But the visual designs of the Dragon Quest 4-6 DS games done by Arte Piazza were exactly what Square should have been doing with their top-down FF games!
And this Romancing Saga 2 if I can say so has a mixed approach to redesigning some tiles and leaving others aside thus creating an inconsistent visual style ala
FF 6 on iPad & Steam. Many users are pretty scathing of that
game's port and
FF V's. Man I wish Gideon would just get around to finishing his RS2 English translation for the
true version - the original! Also there's no full English fan-translation for RS3
. Another romhacker told me that the Spanish romhacker who did the full ESP translation patch for that game is
waiting for someone to provide him with a full English translation that he can insert into a full English patch! If you do not want to buy a tablet just to play this game then there probably is an alternative - you can get the GPD XD (similar in design to a 3DS). It has an Android ecosystem so you could buy that game and play on it with its good controls. But I'm instead saving up for the Pyra open-source handheld device, the successor to the Pandora.

visual style for the RS 2 ports looks somewhat consistent and the sprites are actually untouched! Probably no tile tearing. Though I think the characters seem very small on their battle scene floors. I think I'll wait for a possible PC port.
Must-see Japanese
trailer. This port seems to be much more discretely designed than those awful FF ports. It's not perfect but it for the most part seems pretty spot-on.
