Ooh, cool, another authentic 16-bit 2D platformer in the making for modern systems. Not really a RPG as such like some aforementioned projects. The title is
FOX n FORESTS and the game is being made in Germany. The many different German developers seem to have a fascination with the old-school adventures and platformers made in the 1990's and execute on these inspirations quite well.
The visuals in-game are beautiful and it's got a
foxy (
) character in it that is cute and seems quite the badass as well. The gameplay somewhat reminds me of the various Mickey Mouse platformers on the
SNES and Mega Drive (
Genesis). The story goes that an evil force is trying to mess around with the normal seasons by introducing a new nasty, deadly 5th season into the forested environments! What's more, it even allows you to switch seasons on the fly!

FOX n FORESTS is a 2D 16-Bit style action platformer with adventure and puzzle elements, empowering you to switch seasons on the fly!
...
The game is inspired by the glorious days of 16-Bit and all time classics like Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Wonder Boy in Monster World and ActRaiser 2 as well as the Castlevania and Zelda series.
The very experienced devs are also gaining the assistance of a couple very famous creators of classic and recent platformers:

Next to the above core team we are in close contact to our friends Manfred Trenz (Turrican, Katakis, Rendering Ranger) and Henk Nieborg (Shantae, Mighty Switch Force, Contra 4, The Adventures of Lomax) who are providing additional support in the creation of FOX n FORESTS.
If you check the FAQ list it says the game has some RPG stuff in it:

How is the mix between combat, platforming, puzzles and RPG?
Long answer short: 30% combat, 30% platforming, 20% puzzle, 20% RPG.
It's trending at more than the halfway point in its progress towards the €95,000 goal (Just over €49,000) with 15 days to go until August 13, 2016. So I think it's likely to succeed.
* EDIT (14/08/2016): YES, there was an uncertainty as to whether it would reach the finish line as it was either trending upwards slowly or staying still at the midpoint of the funding amount needed with about 14-15 days to go and then still at 2/3rd or thereabouts with a week to go. It was getting closer and I saw it just above €80K with maybe 3 days to go, it managed to surpass the goal very well at the end of it! It managed to reach €107,875 - that's a lot higher than the quite high but needed €95K it was asking for. Very nice!
* EDIT (06/09/2016): Wow, this other brand-new puzzle-platformer called "
Seasons After All" that has come out just 2 days ago on Steam is so utterly similar in the story, theme and some of the mechanics that your
other foxy character can do in-game to the aforementioned upcoming 16-bit platformer "FOX n FORESTS"! Though it's got a more modern set of hand-painted 2D visuals. It is really surprising but then I realised later on that it may not have exactly been a super coincidence then... It is made by the French-based '
Swing Swing Submarine', maker of two previous decent puzzle-platformers 'Blocks That Matter' and 'Tetrobot and Co.'
Have a look at this
devblog on the game dating back to
early January 2014. SO perhaps the German developers of "FOX n FORESTS" DID see those dev blogs and then decided to make a similar game but in 16-bit graphics and with their own spin on the gameplay! I just checked the Comments section on the German game Kickstarter where somebody asked a similar question to the creators:
- Excerpt from the official game description on the website:
Quote:
As a wild fox you are sent on a perilous journey aided only by your ability to change the seasons at will, manipulating a gorgeous 2D world backed by an enchanting live string quartet.
Summon the power of Winter to freeze a lake solid, or call upon Spring to make trees and flowers grow. The world is yours to manipulate as you travel across forests, rivers, and caves, in order to unveil the secrets of this world and complete a sacred ritual. Each season is protected by a Guardian and it is up to you to master the seasons they grant you.
- Even the Wiki says this about the Plot:
Quote:
The game will follow a Red fox as it traverses a mysterious forest in an effort to rescue the lost spirits of the four seasons
- Lots of great reviews for it:
