When I say western, I was more refering to stuff like Fable or such,
as in stuff made in the west, rather than the archetype of the wild west.

I see what you mean. I liked (heck, loved) Secret of Evermore though, for one. Overly bashed, under rated gem.

Anyway, I just played and beat Lagoon. Another "meh" game. Nothing special, but beat it none the less. Tiny sword syndrome was the order of the day for that game, very annoying!

I just got Soulblazer and realized I have never played it but have always thought that I have. That ever happened to anyone? --- I think I always mistook it for another game and assumed I had beat it. But when I started my "replay" I realized I might have mistook it for another enix game, perhaps Brainlord. But this game rules! Sooo much better than lagoon!

Say, are any of the three snes Ultima games any good? I want to give one of those three a try, which one is best?

How about Wizardry? Never tried. Heard they were unforgiving and hard games. What is the most accessible snes Wizardy game? I liked Arcana which seems to be "Wizardry lite", good level of difficutly, any recommendations on where to go from there for similar snes titles? (saw youtube video of dungeon master and that game looks absolutely dreadfully boring and bland). Eye of the beholder still does not appeal. This looks appealing, style and animation wise, but again, hear it is waaay hard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Naltk3aZ ... Ty9CtwABAA

On an action rpg stint these days between soulblazer, ys 3, lagoon, dragon view (can't stress enough how fun/awesome/under rated this game even in spite of the overworld), shadowrun, gun mans proof, gulliver boy (nice going guys) and neugier I have done exclusively action oriented rpgs - love em, gobble em' up, so I hope I like ULTIMA, what do you guys think?

I have a nice to play list now: finish soul blazer, Ultima (I think the Black Gate), Ys 4, Gundam suit 0079, Fire Emblem - mystery of the emblem, Feda.

I also really want to like the two Shiren the wanderer games, but they are too dang hard.

is Inindo: Way of the Ninja any good? Obitus? Two of the last snes rpgs I have yet to play, never really hear much about those two.

The best Ultima game is Ultima 7 Part 1 and 2. I would also put the Ultima 5 remake Lazarus on par with the 2, perhaps even better. The Ultima 6 remake (U6 Project) also looks to be of similar high quality.

The only SNES Ultima I would even consider is Ultima 6. I cannot emphasize enough not to play the SNES version of Ultima 7. They completely destroyed it. They changed it from a party system of 8 to a one person party and the game control is pretty bad. They also did not include Ultima 7 Part 2 Serpent's Isle. Personally I think this is probably the best of all of the Ultimas. You can play all the PC Ultimas very easily with DOS Box and games like Ultima 7 actually still look pretty good.

I dont know if your into any games made from rpgmaker. but I must say that there are some really good games created by just their community. Most of them all play like most classic turn based snes/nes rpgs. I usually go the the site rpgmaker.net, they got a good selection and they are all free. you do need the RTP(run-time packages) for some of the games to run, some people sometime make their games free of them, but you can get those too for free off the net. rpgmaker.net has a good layout and you can search through the games pretty much anyway you want to (ie. by rank, download, date, etc...), people write reviews and stuff to give you an idea of how good the games are. don't get me wrong there are ALOT of games and ALOT of bad ones/unfinished, but there are definitely some gems with great storys/plots , some with well developed characters, and good battle systems and custom graphics.
They are not super professional and alot of game are kind of the same, kind of short(not necessarily a bad thing), but ya gotta give credit to these people for the work they put into these games. Just to recommend a few....
Demon Legacy - Very well writ story and character development, minus some grammatical errors. The battles a very well balanced, and not much needed for grinding. No random battles, its like tales of Abyss where you see the enemy walking around and you touch them to start the battle off, and they do re spawn after a while so you can grind it you want to. I really dont want to talk about the story because it is really that good, lots of plot twist, and there characters are very well developed. Probably my favorite of all the rpgmaker game. play time some where between 15-25hours depending on how fast you go through it.
Forever's End - Another well developed game, lots of there graphic are taken from Treasure of the Rudras and the manas, but good battle system, lots of characters and each one kind of has his/her own unique type of powers. The story is really good too. i haven't finished it yet but im about 15 hours in. its the first of three chapters and i believe the author is almost done with the second chapter.
A blurred line - this one is a sci-fiction setting game, i just started playing and the games story draws you in really quick, I dont know much about it except it have a battle system like dragon warrior (the first two i talked about are side view like ff6), it got really good reviews by people who played it, and so far i'm enjoying it...
.... i could go on forever about this stuff but i'll shut it... i very much recommend checking out the web site. have fun! :)

I mostly shy away from such games but when enough dedication is put into them, they do
turn out like good Snes RPGs.
One such I'm very fond of is the Alter Aila series.
It has lovely sprite work, good music, branching story paths
and a teeth grindingly hard difficulty. There are are other two
games of the series but they detract a little from the original
so I consider them retellings and not sequels.

Tiamat Sacrament is another good RPGM game, the novelty
being you play as a dragon. The only other two games I recall using
the same premise are Emerald Dragon and - to a lesser extent - Breath of Fire.

Maybe I will give some of the fan made rpgs a try when I run out of rpgs to play for the snes and psx. It seems like sometimes I am very close to running out. But then I revisit a game I intially disliked, as displayed in earlier posts, and come to learn I actually like it! (recent examples include Ys 4, Magna Braban, Mobile Suit 0079 and Cyber Knight 2!!)

For now I wanna give Burning Hearts a try. Then "revisit ;)" Cyber Knight 1 as I feel after CK2 slowly grew on me, I might actually like CK1. "Revisit" Feda, Fire Emblem 3, Orge Tactics, Saga Frontier and Thousand Arms and perhaps even Front Mission.

Haha, this has been a crazy topic, thanks guys for listening to my long winded questions and spiels! Looks like there are not many more snes/psx rpgs! (two best systems for rpgs IMO, snes being clear #1)

PS2 also is very strong in the RPG department.
Too bad the current generation as a whole is not investing
in RPGs and SRPGs, at least not in consoles.

Two words: Gennei Toshi (Illusion City).

It's a cyberpunk RPG in the mold of Phantasy Star by Microcabin for the MSX Turbo-R. It has an extremely poor English translation done by a Portuguese translation group. It involves a far future version of Hong Kong overrun by mutated abominations and ruled by a sinister corporation. Tien Ren, a Diver (somewhat similar to a Blade Runner except trying to detect mutants instead of replicants) protecting Sai Kung City has to face an ancient cult and a modern coup attempt.

It's really really cool, and has impressive graphics as well. Actually, and don't interpret this as in any way connected to this being a translation group; it could use a better translation. Just check it out. You're unlikely to be disappointed.

Instead of making a new post, I thought this was close enough to the right place...

Anyone buying Ni No Kuni today? I've seen TONS of great reviews, and it looks simply gorgeous! My birthday's coming up soon, and I think I may have found my present-to-myself.

I ordered the Wizard's edition so I think I have to wait a few more days to get it. The graphics remind me of Dragon Quest 8 which is one of my favorite games of all time so I'm really looking forward to this. Having this and Tales of Xillia will make a good start for 2013. I'm hoping they also translate the Legend of Heroes game for the PS3 as well, both the PSP remakes and the game specifically designed for PS3.
