Yep, and I've always been mainstream oriented myself. Just between you and me and the deep blue sea (and the not-so-dearly departed Hurricane Earl that my silly wife flew to Boston and bussed to Cape Cod yesterday just in time to greet), I believe the squee factor reigns here. (Ah, yes. GZ said, "A tiny minority will squee over the transliterations and praise you." Heh, that certainly articulates this phenomenon appropriately!)

But honor is a strange compulsion with those who have it. I would rather lose credibility with some unwashed factor who never graced our doorstep than renege on a promise to my teammates. I've seen groups fall apart over less, and the D-D team - along with our plans down the road - is what counts with me.

I understand and I'm not knocking it; I'm just saying, is all.

My own philosophy is similar - I do this stuff for myself, and generally don't much care what most of the fans think. Though it is nice to see happy people enjoying the work, such experiences are tertiary and are merely a result, not an objective. It just happens that my views on these matters happen to coincide with most of my players' views, not to mention that of the wider romhacking world :)

Personally I have never really cared about which names are used. I have seen some pretty heated debates in the past for several games, I think Tales of Heart was one. I personally think the names should be chosen based off of what will result in the least argument reaching a decision and also lead to the least criticism from the community, in other words the names that will waste the least amount of time before and after the game is finished. Message boards on Burning Heroes should be devoted to more important things.

Of course all this is easier said then done. Frankly I'm just happy seeing an update about this game.

Is this more in line with what we should be discussing ultpaladin? Didn't we all agree to dump the Hot-blooded Continent part in FlashPV's beautiful hack of the title page? I recall that Drakee didn't particularly like it, and he usually has pretty good instincts for this sort of thing.

Hee-hee... You are going to love beta testing this game, and we're gonna need you! If Matias wants in on this deal, he needs to quit pouting and check in on the board. And, BTW, Mr. Porcupine still needs to fix it!

All that aside (in case you're hopelessly confused), I have fantastic news concerning BH, but I will save that for a few days to put on the front page. Meanwhile, as further teasers, I believe that Chaos Seed will be our next great release, and HHS or BH may follow that; or it could even be Aretha-II. Nothing like being definite about these matters, is it?

As for names, they are not definitely not the most important part of a translation. That said , personally I'd go with Gideon's suggestions, but it's not my project. Therefore I can only give you my opinion.

Btw, looking forward to the news, always like hearing progress being made.

Well, we still have a ways to go before beta testing. One third of the dialogue files are translated so far, and Ritchie has asked for the remaining untranslated menu files that we still need to find, dump, and send to him. We are also waiting for Bongo` to arrive at a point in which he can resume work on all of the games. Don't forget that Chaos Seed has precedence over BH. But I have a feeling that we will reach a point in which we will see dramatic progress on BH. In fact, I feel certain that our BH work will go very well. So, we need you on the beta test team when that time comes. I hope you will pace your work so that everyone on the beta test team is submitting reports in roughly the same worlds at the same time. Because of multiple characters and non-linear options, this may be a bit tricky, but I'm sure we'll work it out. Meanwhile, I hope all is going well with you. Nice to hear from you!

Appreciate the input, Garrett. We may need to shorten the names anyway due to possibly immutable size constraints in the menus, especially battle menus. I'm seeing that names between three and five letters may be ideal. We may use longer names such as "Barbara" in the dialogue files with no difficulties, but miscellaneous file name usages may need to be truncated to diminutives such as "Barb".

It wouldn't be the first time. Slayers presented us with the same name issues.
